Presented here for your retrocomputing pleasure - ZXpand+

The ZXpand plus is the follow-on model of the ZXpand Classic. It boasts an improved hardware and software specification.

* AY sound built-in

Featuring a Yamaha YM2149F PSG now all the games have no excuse not to offer sound effects :D There is stereo output from the on-board 3.5mm jack socket. Eight of the chip's IO connections are exposed on the interface's bottom edge for the more experimental among us. Easy 'turbo' upgrade via a plug-in adapter board.

* Joystickability built in

Rather than crowd the board with a d-sub plug I have opted to expose the joystick input via the extension connector and a flying lead. This de-couples the interface from any movement of the joystick's plug, adding to the stability of the interface.

* Serial IO

5V TTL serial I/O is available on the extension connector. What to connect here? Well it's up to your imagination. Mouse? Arduino project? ESP8266? The possibilities are endless.

* SD card interface

Simply LOAD or SAVE the program you want, no POKEs, USR commands or drivers required. Fully integrated into Sinclair BASIC. Uses standard FAT formatted cards. Directories are supported so you can organise your files as you wish.

* 32K RAM

No need for a RAM pack. RAM is hires capable, allowing WRX, ARX and other hires schemes to work. Flexible memory mapping allows for RAM at 8-40k or 16-48k. 

* BASIC extension commands

SAVE and LOAD, CAT, ZXPAND and CONFIG are available from the keyboard. Due to space restrictions in the ROM these commands replace the printer commands. Printer commands can be made available if required with a simple command. 

* Misc

Reset button, easy firmware upgrades, actively supported.

100% Compatibile with Timex TS1000 computers.

  • Soru: How do I verify that I have 32K with the ZXpand+. Is there a way of listing free memory on ZX81/TS1000? thanks

    Cevap: There is no built-in memory indication. By default BASIC knows only about 16K. It can be POKEd to give the full amount, but restrictions apply, such as the d-file not straddling the 32k boundary. You can read about these in any 32k rampack manuals, I'll put a wiki article up.

  • Soru: Several other sellers offer Memotech-like cases for the ZXpand+. Will any of these fit your ZXpand+? Can you vouch for any particular one?

    Cevap: The original creator is mhudson52. He is a well regarded seller. There are specific cases for classic and + models. I have one and it is good quality.
