The Atari Lynx was the first colour LCD 16 bit handheld computer games console, released in 1989. It supported 4 channel sound and 16 colours on each scan line from a palette of 4096 colours. With a backlit screen and games loading from ROM cartridge, this should have been a hit, particularly as at the time, the competition were only sporting monochrome displays. However, the cost, weight and lack of battery life, meant that this never proved popular and without reaching the high volume sales required to attract more games software, the Lynx was doomed to fail. Less than 500,000 units were sold worldwide. |
